Columbus-based composer, recording artist, and drummer Mark Lomax II and his musical compatriots perform selections from his 12-album cycle 400: An Afrikan Epic. Supported by a Wexner Center Artist Residency Award, this ambitious project tells the story of black America stretching from precolonial Afrika, through the 400 years after the start of the Transatlantic slave trade in 1619, and into the Afrofuture while celebrating the creativity of a people who continue to endure.

Streetlight Guild presents an encore performance of “The New Black Eastside Songbook,” a six-song suite conceptualized by Columbus writer Scott Woods, featuring new music composed by Counterfeit Madison, Paisha Thomas, Krate Digga, The Ogun Meji Duo (Mark Lomax and Eddie Bayard), and Jordan Sandidge. “The New Black Eastside Songbook” is an exploration of black life and culture in Columbus historically and now, touching on subjects ranging from local jazz legends and privilege to the police and gentrification. It interrogates the definition of Columbus culture, and what relationship such culture might have to the people who both create and partake of it. Utilizing some of Columbus’ brightest musical talent across a variety of styles and backgrounds, this work seeks to establish a bar for the marriage of political context and musical examination, adding new bricks to the foundation of whatever Columbus

Mellon Guest Artist Residency

Dr. Mark Lomax, II has been chosen to serve as a Mellon Long-term Artist-in-Residence with the Denison University Department of Dance. Over the course of spring semester 2017, Dr. Lomax will interact through lectures, presentations, and master classes for courses and students in the Departments of Music, Dance, and Theatre, and for courses in a variety of humanities and social science disciplines including, but not limited to, Black Studies, English Literature, Sociology/Anthropology, and Philosophy. Additionally, Dr. Lomax will be responsible for 5 performances with his professional ensemble during the semester.
