Short North Stage, 1187 N. High St., Columbus, Ohio 43201

COLUMBUS (July XX, 2016) — The Johnstone Fund for New Music, in partnership with Short North Stage and CFG Multimedia, will present the world premiere of Blues in August by composer and drummer Dr. Mark Lomax, II and his ensemble on Wednesday, August 17 at 7:00 p.m. at the Garden Theater. The work was commissioned by the Johnstone Fund. This performance is part of August Wilson and the Four B’s, a yearlong celebration of American playwright August Wilson funded by a grant from PNC Arts Alive. Admission is free.

Inspired by American jazz percussionist and composer Max Roach, Blues in August is a five-movement composition that seeks to engage the fertile space between European classical and African American improvised music, while harnessing the essence of the blues captured in Wilson’s work. Using themes from several of Wilson’s plays as a narrative guide, it celebrates his sense of unbridled humanity.

Blues in August will be performed by musicians including Lomax, Edwin Bayard (tenor saxophone), Dean Hulett (bass), William Manley (violin), Andrew Carlson (violin), Norman Cardwell (viola), and Mary Davis Fetherston (cello).
